CHRISTMAS CRACK

CHRISTMAS CRACK

Saltines, mine come in a pack with 4 joined to be broken apart, so I use 7 - 8 of those -- if broken apart that would be 28 - 32 little ones, your recipe says about 1 sleeve. I don't break them up.  Enough to line a baking tray of 9" x 13" or 10" x 15" the size AND recipe is quite forgiving. Just use what fits.

Oven at 400, line the tray with foil, I also use baking paper over the foil. Or you can light spray with oil.

Ingredients,
Saltines - as above
1 cup butter, or 2 sticks
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 teas vanilla
1/2 teas salt
2 cups chopped chocolate

Lay out the Saltines on the tray

Put butter, sugar and salt into a heavy base pan on medium heat, melt the butter, stirring to also melt the sugar
Keep stirring and cooking for a few minutes, till the sugar is dissolved. Don't let it boil for longer than 30 seconds, it will look like thick caramel sauce. Add vanilla now.

All the rest is WORK AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN

Pour over the saltines, and spread it over to cover as best you can, then bake for 6 minutes, be careful removing, the pan will be HOT
Set on bench and wait one minute, then sprinkle 2 cups chopped chocolate over, wait a minute again, and the chocolate will melt and be easy to spread, I use an offset spatula
(you can melt the chocolate and then spread it, I don't  -- why dirty up another pan LOL )

You can then sprinkle over what you like while the chocolate is still soft.
Think 100s and 1000s, coloured sprinkles, I have also crushed up pretzels, coloured small MnMs or chopped nuts. Be wary, some people don't like nuts though

Cool in the tray and when it's set "crack" it up, just break up with your hands - it's addictive apparently. No nutritional value, just a bit of a sweet treat. You can keep in the fridge, being winter for you  I would just store on the bench.
