Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Can you believe it, almost July!!! Where has the year gone?

I had a lovely day today, met Sarah for coffee at 9am, then we went shopping for clothes for here, didn't get home till after 4p, we met at 9am so a long day.

Hope you are all feeling OK, it's been hot in parts for you and cool in other parts. It's been cool here of course. I took a few pics from Gary's Facebook to show you the "outback" They were on the road inland, and some is not well sealed, he said it was bumpy LOL
The sky was so blue, very pretty.

This was heading back to our state from Queensland

This is a flood plain, Cooper Flood plain it was under water a couple months ago, it changes so quickly.

Their camp set up, the swags are set up, one under the canopy is John's the other is Gary's, the old swag was just a roll, these days they are almost enclosed, and pretty weather  proof. The fire pit to either cook with or keep warm. Gary is a good cook, they have had a few nights in small pubs which has been good too.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Good morning ladies. It's a beautiful morning. Getting hot already on the east side with no trees to shade the early sun. The frogs are all over the hydrangea and daisies. We've had a busy weekend. Lots of ice cream, drives through the valley, garage sales, and an airshow yesterday. We picked raspberries until almost 9p last night and got worn out.
This morning mom is having one of her "episodes" shaking all over and a cold foot sore hands. It lasts for an hour sometimes, as this one is. Helpless to watch. We've called paramedics so many times but she passes all the health checks every time. Admitted once with still zero answers. Mom wore a heart monitor and had a CT brain, waiting till mid July for the follow-ups with cardio and neuro. Not fun waiting. Happy Independence day to you all Tracy

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

MORE FROM YOGI BERRA.......
1.  ORDERING SWEATERS: "THAT'S THE KIND I WANT.  I WANT ONE IN NAVY BLUE AND ONE IN NAVY BROWN."
2.  ON RECEIVING A CHECK MADE OUT TO "BEARER": "HOW COULD YOU SPELL MY NAME LIKE THAT?"

WHAT A CHANGE.  TODAY MAY HIT 79 AND THE SUN IS BRIGHT.

TRISH.......ARE THE SWAGS WHAT WE CALL PUP TENTS, A SMALL SLEEPING TENT FOR ONE PERSON?  THE SET-UP LOOKS GOOD.  I FORGOT WHAT FUN CAMPING OUT COULD BE.  OF COURSE OURS WAS USUALLY AT THE LAKE AND NOT IN DEEP WOODS WHERE A BEAR WOULD BE LESS LIKELY TO COME LOOKING FOR FOOD.

DEVONNE.....SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR FURBABY MOLLY'S HEALTH ISSUES.  THEY ARE SO WELL-LOVED AND MONEY IS NO OBJECT IN KEEPING THEM HEALTHIER.  I HOPE YOU GET SOME ANSWERS AND CAN HELP HER.

BJ.....SORRY FOR THAT MYSTERY HEALTH ISSUE.  I HOPE THEY FIGURE OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THOSE SHAKES AND WHAT TO DO TO MAKE THEM GO AWAY.
HOW NICE TRACY AND FAMILY ARE TO TAKE YOU ON CAR RIDES AND OUT AND ABOUT TO ENJOY THE COUNTRYSIDE. YOU HAVE A GREAT FAMILY.

JANET......I GUESS THERE IS SOME TRUTH IN 'HOLDING YOUR TONGUE' SINCE YOU WENT FROM HEALTHY AS THE PROVERBIAL HORSE TO GETTING ILL TWICE AND CLOSELY TOGETHER, TOO.  I HOPE THIS EPISODE DOES NOT LAST VERY LONG AND YOU CAN ENJOY TOP HEALTH AGAIN.

MY NEIGHBOR NAN BROUGHT ME SOME MEATY SAUCE PASTA FOR LUNCH TODAY.  SHE MADE IT HERSELF AND I ENJOYED IT.  IT WAS GOOD GOING DOWN AND ESPECIALLY SINCE I DID NOT HAVE TO COOK.  I NEED TO BAKE MY PORK CHOP TODAY AND MAYBE HAVE THAT WITH A SALAD.  OR POTATOES.  I WILL DECIDE LATER TODAY.
TAKING IT EASY AS ITS SUNDAY.  SOME READING, TV, PLAYING SOLITAIRE, AND PUZZLE WORK.  NO HEAVY CHORES FOR ME.  I AM TAKING IT EASIER UNTIL I SEE MY CARDIO DR ON TUESDAY SO HE CAN FILL ME IN AFTER WE DISCUSS MY ISSUES.  I THINK I AM JUST SLOWING DOWN SINCE I'M NOW 83 AND NOT A SPRY YOUNG CHICK ANY LONGER.  I WILL JUST HAVE TO TAKE MY CUE FROM HOW I FEEL EACH DAY ON WHAT I CAN HANDLE.
I HAVE A PLAN TO CUT BACK ON MY GROCERIES AND REPLAN MY MEALS SO I CAN SAVE SOME BUCKS AND HIRE SOMEONE TO COME DO THE HEAVY CLEANING ONCE A MONTH......FLOORS AND OVEN AND SCRUBBING COUNTERS AND FURNITURE POLISHING.  THEN I WILL ONLY HAVE LIGHT HOUSEKEEPING TO DO.
MY SON HAS FLOWN TO FT LAUDERDALE FLORIDA FOR A WEEK OF HIS VACATION.  HE WILL BE HOME A WEEK FROM TOMORROW.  I HOPE HE IS ENJOYING THE SUNSHINE.
THAT COVERS MY DAY HERE.  HUGS FOR YOU ALL.  QB S

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Wow, Tracy! Have they done an EEG? Could be a number of things.

We had lunch at Mission Barbecue. Along with the 6 bottles of sauces, =26pxthe guy working the floor brought us out one from the fridge. He called it Alabama white sauce and said it’s mostly mayo and horseradish. Anyone make anything similar? Ralph really liked it.

I spent some time winding bobbins, 20 for each machine. That should last a while! I like the bobbin winder on the 6500 better than the S6.

Another hot one, 91 now. Steph said it’s also 90 in Portland!

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

I've heard of it, Holly.  Duke's Mayo web site has it to order.  Wow!  Forty bobbins.  Sort of like browning your ground beef!  Not much fun but worth it later.

Speaking of which.  I tried a crockpot recipe for hamburger stroganoff yesterday where you didn't brown the burger.  OMG. It was awful.  The burger turned out feeling gritty.  It was completely cooked but the texture was inedible to us. We ate it the once,  but the rest got thrown out.  Serves me right for doing what I've read never to do.

So,  now, I have a cake in the oven.  We're prowling around here, well I am, every evening looking for something sweet.  This is a new one, too.  Chocolate cake mix, substitute melted butter for the oil,  and a cup of coffee for the water.  When it comes out of the oven, you sprinkle milk chocolate chips over it, and spread them as they melt.  I hate, hate icing anything, so we'll see it this is a good alternative.  I asked Howard if he thinks we can control ourselves...

The kids, ML & Bill have arrived at their hotel in Petosky, MI.

QB, I assume Daphne went on vacation, too.   Matt really likes warm climates, doesn't he.
LIving in Maine, though, he gets the cooler weather even in the summertime.  We get some vicarious pleasure too out of our kids being able to go places.

Sorry to hear BJ is having a rough day.  Sounds like they all had some fun, yesterday.

Time to close this.  Supper's next on my agenda.  Maybe kielbasa on the grill.  Kielbasa and cake!  Is that a balanced meal?

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Trish, they got a great campsite! Do they go fishing too? I hated camping. The packing, the unpacking, the bees, the mosquitos, the heat...need I say more, lol! Greg and Carter went camping to a place called Cloudland Canyon State Park. There were so many scorpions, they rented a cabin the 2nd night, lol!

Tracy, thanks for keeping us updated. I hope you have answers soon and also hope you are completely recovered as well.

I'm headed out to give my car a quick wash. I have a doctor's appt. at 10:30 in the morning, just a follow up with the doctor who did my surgery in December. Gary is going with me.

Sandra, that's a great idea to put your money to better use to help you out. I'm sure your neighbors enjoyed all the good food while it lasted.

I watched a lady fix boneless pork chops. She put a heaping scoop of chive cream cheese on each one and spreaded it out. She crumbled up Ritz crackers and put them on top. Looked good, but you never know?

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Sandra - your son seems to have a lot of vacation time.
Judy and Devonne- I rarely experiment with new recipes. I stick to my reined and true. Never used a crock pot or air fryer.
We ate out yesterday…nice treat.
Camping? Ugh. I went  to girl scount camp for a week. Hated it. And went to a campsite with DH and friends on the Delaware. I gave up after about an hour and check into a HI down the road.
My idea of roughing it is a HI instead of a Ritz Carlton. 😊

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

=26pxIt’s getting darker out and thunder is getting closer.

Judy, how was the cake? I found a recipe online for the Alabama white sauce, and Ralph likes it better than the one we had at Mission Barbecue.

Janet, I’m with you on camping. It has no appeal for me.

I finished a new book by Riley Sager, called With A Vengeance. I found it to be just meh.

Dinner tonight is smoked turkey from Mission Barbecue leftover from yesterday. We finished the Olive Garden salad for lunch.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

My followup appt. went well. July 16 will be 7 months since my DM. He checked the lymph nodes in my throat and under my arms .. and the surgery site. They don't do MRI's to check for recurrence; only a physical exam. I go every 6 months for a few years and it will change to once a year.

I'm dropping Molly off in the morning at 9 am. The vet seems to think it's Cushing disease instead of her heart murmur. They are going to do x-rays and bloodwork. An echocardiogram, if needed, will be $645.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Holly, the cake was good.  Best thing, though, simple and easy to do.    Howard loves all icings and I like very few.  So, I try to convince him it's not good for him.   We both like milk chocolate better than the other types so the cup of milk choc. chips melted on top was perfect for both of  us.   Thanks for the tip about hiring someone to mow.  There's no one close by that I know of  and there is about 1/2 an acre of lawn. He has the necessary riding mower, just hates yard work.
With the "young men" growing up, now, next door, in the woods, possibly  at some point they might want to earn some money.  Their dad offered several times last winter for them to shovel, but what is needed here is plowing our 200 foot driveway and Howard has a plow for his truck. Of course, midway thru today, the mower belt broke, so he got a reprieve...today.

I  liked camping when I was a kid and didn't need to get up in the night several times and didn't ache or have insomnia.  Then I married Howard and really hated it!   We did it many times in various tents/campers/etc.  I had to go to all the trouble to get it stocked and ready and when we got to the campground, he wouldn't even eat outside (bugs), always had a TV so we sat inside the camper in the a/c and watched the same TV as at home after all that rigamarole.    Plus, we never camped with anyone we knew and Howard isn't social so he had no interest in anybody else at the campground.  It was always a nightmare for me.  He deer hunted many years and he would go early to the hunting site with his two young sons,  where I was expected to come later, sometimes after I worked all day, then drove 25 miles to pick up Danny if it was his weekend with us, then back home 25 miles and on to the hunting area AFTER I stopped for  KFC for supper.  It was  Fall, cold, dark as pitch by the time I got there.   Howard was hungry and mad because it took me so long, and...I don't know how I did it and believe me, I would never do it again.  So...in later years when he even mentioned camping, I suggested he pitch his tent (the campers were long gone) right here in the front yard and have a ball!  I was staying in my own bed!  BTW, that never happened.  Sorry for the long rant.  As you can see, the word "camping" raises something up in me that isn't pretty!!  And I know, I was a sap!

Janet, I can't explain why someone who declares all the time how much she dislikes cooking, still keeps trying  new recipes?  Most of the time. I'm disappointed with them.  I've heard and wonder if  it's true that taking the various meds we take has dulled our sense of taste.  So nothing tastes that good.   The scary thing is for all the many years I've been cooking, I find it hard to remember WHAT I cooked in the early years--MY tried and true,  when I had a family to cook for.
BTW, we're having tuna macaroni salad for supper.  It's made  and in the frig!

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Judy, we weren’t assertive then, we just went along with things. After Heather was born, my in-laws moved to Wildwood, 90 miles away. Ralph’s idea of going there (2 blocks from the beach) was laying out in their yard, and never going to the boardwalk. I wised up after a few of those trips, and refused to go during the summer, and rarely in the winter.

My mom hated to cook and she was never good at it. She had a rotation of maybe 15 meals she’d make. They included frozen chop suey and rice, lamb patties, and something we called rubber steak. I ate a lot of peanut butter! I never even heard of lasagna til I met Ralph! His grandmother taught me how to make lasagna, and Italian meatballs.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Good evening friends!

It still is extremely humid and hot.  My AC has been running for days, which is very unusual for us.  It is pouring rain at this exact moment, but only supposed to do so for a short time.  North of us has flood warnings.  Aaron still had no AC and we finally scheduled a company to come out on this Thursday.  Hopefully that will fix it.  It is only 5 years old come September.  We put in a new furnace and AC at that time.

We had the combination birthday gathering for all four grandkids.  It was just family and we had a great time.  Kids squirted papa with that silly string and covered him in it.  lol!  I had ordered a cake from Giant Eagle grocery store and it was delicious!  White cake, strawberries layered in the middle with whipped cream frosting.  It was mostly all gone with the exception of a couple of pieces and I sent them with Aaron's kids.  We had tons of food, much too much for just 13 people, but we have lots of left overs and we all had some to take home.  So, no cooking for a few days!

Holly, my mom was a pretty good cook, but she did not love it and I am the same.  I only cook so we can eat.  I do like to try different recipes, though, and have found some good ones.  I love to watch American Test Kitchen because they have "down home" food, which is what we like.

I enjoyed camping in the camper, but not so much with tent camping.  It was a lot of work even with the camper and now days it is so expensive to camp for the weekend, if one is lucky enough to reserve a camping site.  Since Covid, camping is very popular.  I am not missing camping this summer since we sold the camper.  I do miss the smell of a campfire and sitting around it in the evening.

I still need to put binding on top and bottom of my quilt, but have not been interested in doing it.

Sending well wishes to all, but especially to BJ and Janet.
Devonne, prayers for your precious Molly.  Hope she is doing ok.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Weather has been wild here, Gary & John traveling home tomorrow, hope they don't have to contend with icy roads, supposed to clear a bit tomorrow, been pretty bad today.

SANDRA I don't think the one man tent is similar, the swag is a sleeping bag, just for laying down, its has the high top for more air, and can been completely closed in the rain. Harder for John to sleep in now as he's so tall, he has to be straight, and he likes sleeping on his side, so harder to do that in the swag, tonight they are staying in a farm shed so out of the weather, they are staying with Gary's friend on his farm about 4 hour drive from home.

DEVONNE hoping for good news for Molly, our Buddy had Cushings, he had no medication as he coped with it OK, he had it for some years, but his little body finally gave in. The guys didn't always have pretty sites to camp, some were just dirt and flat, not near the water at all. But they have had a good time and seen a lot of great things.

ME I could never camp, like JANET mine would be 3 star motel not 5 star LOL I was not made for sleeping on the ground.

INDY  and HOLLY I don't blame you for not wanting to go in those circumstances, it's not a holiday!!

BJ & TRACY I hope you are doing OK, and know we are thinking of you each day with love

I am tired, went to yoga finally, then training today, it was so cold, and the rain didn't help, cold wind but our coach worked us hard, we got pretty warm by the end, it's annoying though, we have a shelter (canteen at the sports field) and it's open on 3 sides, but now kids have been climbing on the roof and the roof has been letting in rain, so we can only use 1/2 of it. We've notified the local council but it's not high on their priorities, so we just have to deal with it.

I finally got my hexagon block  finished today, not the greatest, but it's finally done, those EPP blocks are going to be the death of me!!

CHERYL my mum and dad were both very good cooks, unusual for dad, he was born in 1925 and men didn't often cook, but he cooked breakfast every day for us, and always a Sunday roast lunch while we went to church. We had a very varied menu, unlike the  Mr, his family didn't eat a big variety. We had stews, pasta, curries, mince beef dishes made go further with lentils or dried beans, fish of all kinds --  any food you could think of.  But my favourite was pancakes on a Sunday night when it was cold and we had golden syrup in a metal dish near the fire so it was kept warm, and we ate with plates our laps. Or when dad got Chinese take away on a Sunday night. It wasn't often for those dinners but I remember them so well.

Mum was a fabulous baker, she had her disasters too LOL She made lots of cookies, cakes and slices for our school, and my friends used to all come around for afternoon tea after school, knowing there would be something to tempt them.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Cheryl- thank you.
Well, 3 sleepless nights in a row is taking its toll.

I began making Thanksgiving dinners at the age of about 14.  My mother was a very good cook but she chose not to most of the time and my dad let her “get away” with it.  She was not a very sociable woman except for her “women’s club”.  She would often make big family dinners on the weekends and then go to her room before guests came.  I don’t remember anyone ever asking where she was?  After everyone left, she would come down and eat.  We cleaned up.
Anyway, my dad was a good cook but very messy.  He would use every pot, pan, knife, etc and we’d have to clean up. lol.  We did a fair amount of take out or eat out.
My oldest sister was a queen and did little or nothing. My middle sister never cooked but did clean up and walk the dog.  I was like Cinderella and I’ve never forgotten it.
Back to camping for a minute…I hate bugs and dirt and that’s why I don’t garden either.  The closest I get to that is dead heading the flowering shrubs. 🤷‍♀️. And telling the landscapers what to do.   I am in charge of the pool.
Speaking of cooking, I had better defrost the chicken.  Baked chicken, mashed, vegetables….

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

Dropped Molly off at the vet at 9:00. So far the estimate is $662. I told them to check her ears again and give her an allergy shot. She had a really bad ear infection (both ears) in March. She's my baby, so I'll do what I can to make the best of her last years better. She is 13 so not many years left.

I enjoy trying new recipes. The egg, bacon and whatever you want to add muffins was a new recipe to me. I liked it and will make it again. I added spinach and onions. I saw a lady cut up hotdogs and added them to her chili. Sounds good to me, so I'm going to try it! Being one person, I have to cut most recipes in half or third!

Cheryl, what a great way to have a birthday party! I also like America's Test Kitchen.

My mom was a great cook. She was a "make it from scratch" cook. She made the best rice pudding I've ever had, banana pudding and the best biscuits. I don't recall my Dad ever making anything. Maybe he warmed up the coffee, lol?

Greg bought a brand new Tesla! Something about getting one before the tax incentive and $7,500 credit ends. His old one is 5 years old, but it only has 43,000 miles on it.  As for me, I took a break from car shopping. I need to get back to it. Yesterday my low tire pressure light came on and wouldn't go off...still is on. I rolled down the passenger window and it wouldn't roll back up. Had to turn the car off and back on & it finally rolled up. Think it's telling me it's time, lol?

Judy, I think we are the only two that make the tuna macaroni salad. I forget about it. Will add it to my "to make" list this week.

Re: ODT SUNDAY JUNE 29 ~ SAT JULY 6

My first husband's mom was a wonderful cook.  I ate many of her delicious meals.  She could cook a beef heart w/horseradish sauce and make it taste good.  They were also deer hunters and she made venison edible.  Howard's mom was a good Southern cook, too.  My grandma who I lived with was a plain farmer's wife cook.  We ate the vegetables she grew, her fresh fried chicken which she butchered herself and a few store bought things. We never ate out.  We were 10 miles out in the country.    Neither she nor my mom liked to cook. After she remarried, Mom,, who preferred to work out in the yard, would wait til the last minute to figure out supper.  My step-dad would eat anything without complaint.  Whenever she went away for a brief visit or a mini-vacation with ML and I, she'd cook a  big pot of beans for him and he'd eat them for every meal...cold!  He didn't even bother to heat them up.
ML and I are  reluctant cooks and just so-so.  Then, along comes Andrew who has an unbelievable knack for cooking.  Makes it hard for her to step up and try to "please" him when he's home.  Trish, what a  wonderful food legacy you have.

Devonne,  hoping that Molly can be fixed up, once again.  She's so worth it.   Vet care can cost more than our care.  Howard always joked about how much our two free dogs cost us.  And they lived to be 15 and 16.    Hugs for you.

ML and Bill are enjoying their anniversary vacation in Upper MIchigan.  Have sent some great pics.  I have a hair cut at 1;30 today.  Groceries after that and the inevitable stop at W-M for his
meds.
Have a good day.
Indy
