Cheryl, Manda makes a chili that is fabulous. It has canned pumpkin in it, which adds a richness without the pumpkin taste.
Janet, I’ve never known anyone who had an electric fence, so I never thought of the issues you brought up, but you are so right!
Judy, when my kids were growing up we entertained a lot. Grown up parties and kid parties. When the kids grew up and moved out, the entertaining slowed. Of course, we had the pool when the kids were growing up. Later, Heather and Ed became the entertainers. Now, when we’re visiting with family, I give Heather cash for all the food, and we’re all happy.
Janet, do you do special foods for Rosh Hashanah? My spelling looks wrong.

MALAPROPS......

2. THEY WERE SINGING WITHOUT ACCOMPANIMENT. YOU KNOW-----ACAPULCO.
RAIN, RAIN IN OUR FORECAST FOR TOMORROW. CROSSING MY FINGERS.
WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER WE GOT TOGETHER WITH FAMILY EVERY SAT. NIGHT, EACH TAKING TURNS. IT WAS ALWAYS AFTER DINNER SO GOODIES AND SOMETIMES SANDWICHES AND COFFEE AND SODA WERE PROVIDED. NO LIQUOR.....MOST WERE TEE-TOTALLERS. WE TALKED FOR HOURS. SOMETIMES DRIVING HOME AT 2 OR 3 IN THE MORNING. IT WAS A GOOD TIME.
WE DIDN'T HAVE FENCES AT MY SON'S HOME. HE HAD 7 ACRES OF WOODS BEHIND THE HOUSE AND A 300 FOOT DRIVEWAY WITH WOODS ON BOTH SIDES. THE ROAD WAS PRIVATE AND WOODED FOR THE 7/10THS OF A MILE FROM THE HIGHWAY. OUR DOGS RAN FREE. THEY NEVER WANDERED OFF. MOSTLY THEY STAYED IN THE GARDENS OR THE LAWN AREAS. DAISY, THE GOLDEN, WOULD SOMTIMES GO ACROSS THE ROAD TO THE POND AND COME HOME HAPPY AND MUDDY. MY DOGS NEVER STRAYED OFF THE PROPERTY. THE SAME WITH THE CATS. I STILL MISS THOSE DAYS.
I HAVE MY CLOSET CLEARED FOR ACTION. FOUND OUT THIS MORNING THAT THE NOTICE WAS WRONG AND THE MAINT. GUYS NEED TO ALSO GET INTO THE CLOSET AND RUN THE WIRES FROM THE BACK OF IT, WHICH IS THE HALL WALL, TO THE FRONT OF THE CLOSET. I MOVED MORE STUFF OUT. I FEEL THAT WHEN THEY ARE DONE, I WILL GO THRU WHAT I PLAN TO PUT BACK IN THE CLOSET AND DO SOME CLEARING AND REARRANGING. ALSO TAKE AN INVENTORY OF THE FOODS I STASH THERE.
GOT TO GET READY FOR DOG-SITTING. HUGS. QB S

Good Morning to everyone!! It is a beautiful day outside. Quite still down low but breezy up high. I don't have any plans for the day, so will just sign off, wishing you all well, BJ.

Linda, if you have Netflix, the movie is on there. I added it to my list to watch. Sorry about the dental appt. That happened once to me and Billy. I took him to his endocrinologist appt. and she said we never had an appt. that day. She was right and we were wrong. I must have written it down wrong. I always called after that, lol.
Holly, I have never had much willpower either. That's why I've been so overweight, up and down, for the last 30+ years. I've learned not to say much to family because they say "another diet?", lol. Greg is more supportive because he has learned a lot about the healthy things to buy. He still is overweight, like me, lol. I've always had a craving for sweets. I could eat 4 or 5 Little Debbie cakes at one time. They are small, right?
I know a lady who lost 50 lbs. going to Weight Watchers. She went out to celebrate and ate an entire dozen of Dunkin' Donuts by herself. She felt bad afterwards.
The caulk has arrived (had Home Depot deliver it....lazy, I know). It shouldn't take no more than an hour to do this. The crack is getting bigger so this is a must do. Rain is moving in Thursday so it will be dry way before then.
Judy, how much longer do you think this will last going to people's homes? I would be just like you are. We want everything to be perfect, but we know it's normally not going to be, lol. We used to live next door to Sanford & Son. He managed apartments and he brought home everything! Thank goodness, he only moved in a few years before we sold that house and moved.

Devonne, the Downton Abbey movie on Netflix isn’t the newest one. I went with friends to see it last week. It does a great job of winding up the story and I enjoyed it but, honestly, was a little disappointed.
For a couple of months, my left shoulder has been bothering me and I have mild pain when raising my arm or reaching back. It’s not terrible but has lasted so long that I decided to go to the doctor about it. An x-ray showed some mild arthritis (not surprising) and the physical therapist that she referred me to thinks I have tendinitis. It took 2 weeks to get that much done … and in that time, it has improve! I had a therapy session this morning. She thinks a few more sessions will be good for my shoulder even though it would probably continue to heal on its own.
About fences and dogs …. I grew up in a rural area. Most families had at least one dog, all roamed the neighborhood freely but always found their way home.
Do you have pet peeves? Something that bugs me is when the bagger decides something needs to be double bagged and then stuffs the handles of the first bag down inside the second bag, making it so you still hold it by just one set of handles.
Judy, we look at our own house more critically than other people’s houses. Your house is probably as clean or cleaner as everyone else’s even without the extra you do to prepare. Someone once told me that all she does when expecting company is hide most of the clutter, clean the glass in the door that company will use, and shine the bathroom faucets.

Hi, all. I'm still trying to read.
Electric fences? We had one. We tried to figure out the proper height because we had one 80+ Dalmatian and an 8 pound Pom-a-poo. We thought we had it right. The Dalmatian walked over it, the little one went under it, and I walked into it. My hopping around yelling entertained both dogs and Glen. The fence went away. We do have a wood fence around most of the property, but the front is open.
My pet peeve is able-bodied individuals who leave shopping carts in the parking lot.
So, the really bad news from our trip is that Glen had to have Bailey put down while I was gone. It's been hard for both of us.
The Garden of Quilts show was fabulous! It was well worth the trip out there to walk through beautiful gardens and see lots of quilts.
Trish, Theresa and I went to a presentation from Riley Blake called "Celebrating 250 Years of Jane Austen." She talked about the process of re-creating Jane's quilt, showed off the quilts they are currently producing to celebrate each of the novels, promoted their newest quilt that celebrates Jane, and gave us a sneak peek of their newest line, Beatrix Potter. I need about 15 grandchildren because those fabrics are so stinking cute! Oh, wait, I don't have kids. Hmmmm........................

Carol, I’m so sorry about Bailey, that’s so hard. Your trip sounds fantastic!
I had PT this morning, then we went to Applebee’s for lunch because Ralph had a free dessert coupon for his birthday.
I’ve been considering a treadmill. My first text was to my niece, because her oldest works at Dick’s Sporting goods, and I wanted to see if he gets a commission- he does not. There is a huge one at PT, and the therapist let me try it out. I did .5 mile in 5 minutes, but theirs doesn’t count steps, just mileage. Plus, it’s an industrial one, but I got an idea. We had one about 20 years ago, and used it til the motor went.
Mary Lou, good to see you! Did the Downton Abbey movie wrap up everything in a satisfying way?
Today is my oldest grandson Eddie’s 22 birthday! I started quilting when Heather was pregnant with him!
Tomorrow the housecleaner comes, yay! I’ll hole up in the sewing room and stay out of her way!

CAROL so sorry about Bailey, so hard to loose our babies ((((hugs))))
I made Jane Austen, AND we saw the original last year, they did the reproduction fabrics so well, the kit from Riley Blake was very good, the template made thing easy, it went together fast.
SANDRA looks like both you and I were cleaning out closets too funny, I did all our drawers and inside the closet on Monday. Hope you had lots of cuddles with dog sitting!
HOLLY good idea to use the boys, but Pete was home to do the lifting of the TV, the only heavy thing, they boys would have been just hanging about mostly, I cleaned each drawer inside and out (tossed things) and also the runners inside, the whole room is completely dust free and wiped down. Now to just keep it that way
Took all afternoon and lucky I have a good son who bought dinner for us all
INDY it takes a lot to cater for a group like that, it's not a small group, even with people bringing things (((hugs)))
MARYLOU how weird to not keep both handles out to carry, isn't that the whole point
I was so tired last night, but didn't sleep well, the new bed is comfy, very hard, not sure how the mr will survive it. We shall see. I had the dreaded dentist today, glad to have that done. Now I am busy trying to get more blocks done, have done a bit of ripping amazing how often you can get 2 piles of fabrics mixed
Tonight it's pork chops, mash, steamed veg and some coleslaw we had leftover from dinner the other night.
It's starting to get cool, was [retty cold last night, but we are headed for temps in the 80s at least next few days.
I want to see my sis on Friday, we got news about my brother, they have stopped the last demo, will give hime 2 week break and then a small dose of chemo, the cancer readings have increased dramatically, and the end result is palliative care after this. I have been expecting it. Still mad at him, such a preventable cancer - also totally perplexed that they have booked another cruise AND a trip to Japan next March, doubt he will make it, I do understand making plans is good, but this was silly, they know its not good news. They will lose their money, no insurance will pay out if they cancel. I just don't get him (and her) at all
I was worried how my sis would take it, she has always been the one to say he can beat this, she's fine though, like me she is fatalistic and we will be sad when the time comes but he has not been a constant in our lives for many, many years.

GOOD MORNING!
SO SORRY ABOUT BAILEY.
I REALLY ENJOYED THE DOWNTON ABBY MOVIE, BUT I AM A FAN. BIGGEST DISAPPOINT FOR ME IS THAT IT THE LAST. MARY LOU, WHAT WAS DISAPOOINTING FOR YOU? MY SIS TOOK ME. SHE IS NOT A FAN, SO COULDN'T FOLLOW ALL OF THE STORY LINE. KNOW SHE SAW THE FIRST MOVIE, BUT NOT THE SECOND ONE, SHE THINKS.

Funny how I live not so far from Linda (maybe 30-40 mins) and we had heavy rain for hours yesterday?
So my missing orders finally showed up! The one with the lace doilies that came from MA took almost 2 weeks! It bounced around the west coast for a week. And the larger wool kit and wooden barn frame took almost 3 weeks to get here from WI. That one actually fell off the tracking “radar” for about 10 days. Then it appeared in NC depot and then went to Ohio and then NY before going back to NC and then here. And the third one which was coming from Richmond (about a 3 -4 hour car ride) took a side trip to Pacific NW? before going to Texas and then back to northern VA. So glad I wasn’t in a rush for these items.
So sorry about Bailey.
You girls have inspired me to think about declutterring….notice I said “think” not act. lol. I did put trash bags on the grocery list. I still have a few cartons that never got unpacked since our move 14 years ago!!! 🙄😵💫. Do I open them or just pitch them?

2. NEW HOUSING FOR ELDERLY NOT YET DEAD.
ITS GETTING DARKER OUT THERE. RAIN IS FORECAST. CROSSING MY FINGERS.
FIBRE GUYS HAVE NOT HIT OUR FLOOR YET. WISHING THEY WOULD HURRY. I WANT TO GET BACK TO SEWING BUT THERE IS SO MUCH HIDDEN UNDER CLOSET STUFF RIGHT NOW I CANNOT DEAL WITH DIGGING FOR IT.
MARYLOU......WHEN I SHOPPED, I ALWAYS TOLD THE PACKER WHAT TO DO. IE: "THE BLUE BAG IS FOR COLD STUFF (IT WAS INSULATED)." NEXT TIME TELL THEM "DON'T HIDE THE HANDLES." THEY ARE THERE TO SERVE YOU SO ITS OK TO TELL THEM WHAT YOU NEED. THEN SAY A POLITE 'THANK YOU' WITH A SMILE.
TRISH.....SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR BROTHER AND HIS AILMENTS. THEIR MAKING PLANS SO FAR AHEAD AND THEN NOT BEING ABLE TO RECOUP THE MONIES IS NOT VERY SMART SO I AGREE WITH YOU. THEY SHOULD BE MORE REALISTIC.
CAROL.......I AM SO SORRY YOU LOST YOUR DARLING FURBABY. ITS ALWAYS TOUGH SO ON US. I KNOW YOU WILL FEEL THE LOSS FOR QUITE A LONG TIME. HUGS FOR BOTH YOU AND GLEN.
I JUST SUBMITTED TO SAVE ANY COPY AND SEE THAT HOLLY HAS POSTED.
ITS BINGO NITE SO I HAVE LEFTOVERS OR SANDWICHES TO EAT TODAY. NO COOKING TIL WEEKEND. THEN I THINK A POT OF CHICKEN RICE SOUP.
SOMEONE ASKED HOW BIG WAS OSCAR? I WILL POST A PICTURE FROM YESTERDAY WITH HIS LOVELY BUTTERFLY EARS. HE'S ONLY ABOUT 10 INCHES AT THE SHOULDER BUT A STURDY LITTLE GUY. WELL-FED. CUTE AS A BUTTON AND WE GET ALONG GREAT. HE'S GOOD COMPANY.
YESTERDAY.
LITTLE OSCAR LAST SEPT. WITH HIS BEST PAL, TOM.
PLANS FOR TODAY ARE MINIMAL. WHAT CAN ONE DO WHEN WAITING FOR WORKMEN TO GET ON WITH THE JOB. I GUESS I WILL BE READING AGAIN TODAY AND WATCHING TV AND PLAYING SOLITAIRE ON MY PUTER. MY FINGERS ARE ITCHING TO SEW. I DREW A COUPLE OF CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOSTS AND WOULD LOVE TO MAKE ONE BEFORE HALLOWEEN. HE WAS ALWAYS A FAVORITE

Lisa, our monthly housecleaner is here, so I’ve been staying out of the way! I got the backings and backings cut for Manda’s 2 tablecloth runners, and the sandwiching done, then I had to vacate for Lisa.
it’s so humid, like 80%. Rain predicted for the next several days. Janet, Heather lives 30 miles from us, and it can be clear here and pouring there!

Carol, so sorry about the loss of Bailey. It is devastating to lose a beloved pet for sure.
Trish, so sorry about your brother. May his final days be without pain.
Oh, Sandra, that Oscar is a doll! He is adorable and it would be much fun to dog sit him.
It is still raining here, just lightly today. The ground still has patches that are just deep cracks, so we can use all the rain we can get right now. Seems chilly after all the warm and sunny 80 degree days that we had last week.
Aaron has been sick for over a week. He did a virtual appointment on Monday and got a steroid and an inhaler. His immune system is not good still and he gets anything and everything going around. He had to travel to St Louis and Tulsa last week for work and probably got something from the plane ride. Doc told him to check for a strain of covid, but not sure if he did or not.
No plans for today, just watching TV and reading. I really need to think of something for supper as we have been eating leftovers for the past couple of days. Nothing sounds appetizing.

I see it just crossed over to p.m. We were up and out early for our fasting blood draws. Then, home by 9 for breakfast for me and a yogurt for him as he is out having lunch with the ROMEOs.
Carol, so sorry for you and Glen losing Baily. Praying for comfort for you.
QB, isn't it interesting how much the urge to do something you want to increases when you are prevented from doing it? Oscar is darling. Just the right size in IMHO. It might be hard not to get too attached to him. Beware!
I laughed out loud at the last two day's jokes from you. Thanks again for taking the time to do this for us. I know those were special days for you back at your son's place. Maybe sometimes even a bit too much for you (I remember all you took on yourself) but, done willingly and you had your garden and the pets and the kids and even Mary who was your friend, then.
I have a plaque in my bathroom with the "A time for every season" verses on it. How true it's become for Howard and me and for most of us here. But, you all encourage me to keep on, keeping on with all the things in your lives, still.
Devonne, I've wondered the same thing...how long? We could meet in the Fireside Room at the church, but most still want to keep on doing this in our homes. It was even suggested that we all go to Dewey's, the 99 yr. old, sometimes, and just carry everything in, since he may not be able to come out, anymore. All of us but Howard (and Dewey) are in our 80s. If I could keep the clutter under control (self-discipline), the rest of it isn't too hard. And, I do have ML who's so willing to help. Sounds good for now, when I've just done my duty!!
Linda, so sorry for the mixup. It involved a lot of planning. Too bad in a case like this, they wouldn't work you in. But, I know appts. are tight and they don't do that. But you didn't need that extra stress. Otherwise, many of them inundate you with continual reminders and wanting you to Confirm, which reminds me of one of my pet peeves: the endless requests afterwards for "How did we do?" or surveys of one kind or another. I don't care who it is, I ignore those. Good grief!
Whatever happened to "That's your job, do it and leave me alone!" Sorry, for the vitriol...
Trish, congrats on the new bed. Hope both of you can adjust to it quickly. You did a lot of work getting ready for it.
Soooo, I need to get a bite of lunch. Will be leftover tossed salad with onions. Howard won't eat them and I plopped the rest of the ones I chopped on top of the l/o salad, so it's mine.
Have a good day. Enjoy the fall weather, whatever it is...

A couple of you asked me about Downton Abbey. I think they did a great job of winding up all the story lines. I was especially happy to see how Edith seemed to be doing so well. I guess the reason I was a little disappointed was that I expected it to be more spectacular. There wasn't anything that I didn't like, I just expected more.
Holly, you think 80% is so humid??? You should visit me sometime in July when we have humidity in the 90's!
Offline
Mary Lou, I just checked the weather app, right now our humidity is 90%! We also see 90% a lot in the summer. This morning I was standing still and I was sweating! But it’s too cool to turn on the AC, it would not kick in.
Offline
Trish, so sorry about your brother. I know you expected the news, but it's still a tough blow to take.
Linda, sorry about your mixup. It's so aggravating.
I never watched DA, so the movie isn't going to be in my future.
Holly, just remember Houston in the summer! By the way, Painted Pony & Quilts closed down. The owners were old and sick, so they just had a big sale and closed.
So, the US Postal Service. Yeah. This is a tale, so sit back and read. Theresa and I stopped at Canyon de Chelly in NE Arizona. I was there last year, and the hiking trail was closed. This year it's open. 1.5 miles, 2.5 hours. The problem is that it's 600 feet from the rim of the canyon down to the floor of the canyon. 600 feet down means 600 feet back up. Carol is not hiking like that anymore. Several times I thought I was about to call for medical backup. At one point, I lay down on a bench and told Theresa that the buzzards could have me and she could have the fabric. Apparently, I dropped my phone about that time.
I didn't realize it was missing until we got back to the top. No signal means no hunting for it. We left word at the ranger station and continued on to Zion National Park. I did tell Glen that evening, using Theresa's phone. He laughed and said we could kiss it good-bye and I would get a new one. He wants a new one, so I knew that disappointed him. The day after Bailey's death wasn't a good day anyway. The next morning (4:45 AM our time) he texted Theresa that someone had found the phone and left her contact information.
So, a woman found my phone, but she didn't trust the park staff. So, she asked her daughter for help, and the young woman used my emergency button to get in touch with Glen. I called her, and she lives close to the canyon. We decided she could mail it to the hotel (this is the USPS part). I didn't want her to be out any money, so I thought I would send her a postal money order overnight and she could cash it. She only has a PO box, and USPS won't deliver overnight to a box.
The best solution was to send her the money through Western Union. She was headed to her WM the next day, a two-hour drive away. So, I needed to send her the money that evening. By then, we were at Bryce Canyon. The closest WM to us, was, yes, two hours away. I will never take having 3 WMs within a 5-mile radius for granted again. So, we took off for WM, got there, and went through the Western Union interrogation. I realize she was trying to save me from a scam, but I really did think that this young woman wouldn't have tried so hard to find me if she was planning a scam. So, we sent the money, did some shopping, drove two hours back to Bryce, and hoped for the best.
Sure enough, she called Theresa the next morning. She had the money and was at the post office. She addressed the envelope to me at the Lehi, Utah hotel. The post office could only send it ground because of the battery, so it wouldn't arrive until the day after we left. So, we asked her to change the address to my home address. She put a new label on top of the old one (see where this is headed?) Maybe. Theresa gave Glen the tracking number.
The morning that we were due to leave, Glen said he hadn't gotten the package, and the tracking number said it was in Lehi, Utah! Yes, it gets weirder. Theresa and I were leaving, but Lisa was staying as she had a late-afternoon flight. She volunteered to wait at the hotel for the mail to be delivered. If you ever need someone to go on a mission for you, get Lisa. Trust me on this one. She called the Lehi post office, talked to the supervisor, got connected to the carrier, and he altered his route to get to the hotel faster. No phone. She called the supervisor again. This time, the woman had the package in her hand, with my Houston address clearly on the front, and no clue as to how it arrived in Utah. The only guess is that the tracking number took precedence over the address label. So, Lisa got an Uber, went to the post office, gave them my name, address, etc., and her ID. Apparently they either believed her, or they just wanted this thing out of their hands and didn't really care how it happened. Lisa put my phone in her purse, brought it back to Houston, and I retrieved it from her on Sunday. It works just fine.
Now how is that for a tale? I am so grateful for the kindness of total strangers and the patience and persistence of really good friends. The $100 I sent to this young woman was a bargain compared to having to buy a new phone and redo all of my accounts. I hope she used her reward for something good for herself.
